What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Learn what makes Naturopathic Medicine unique and how a Naturopathic Doctor can help you.

A lot of people ask...what exactly is Naturopathic Medicine? This is a great question! Naturopathic Medicine is a distinct system of medicine that skillfully combines natural therapeutic traditions with modern science to restore and optimize health. Naturopathic Medicine is a form of complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of chronic diseases and bodily dysfunction using non-invasive measures. These measures typically include clinical nutritional prescriptions or nutritional supplementation, lifestyle modifications, herbal medicine, and yes, sometimes conventional pharmaceutical prescriptions. Naturopathic Medicine takes a holistic and functional approach to human health, rather than an ultra-compartmentalized view of the human body. An underlying philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine is the inherent capability of the body to HEAL given the right tools and under the right conditions.

It is COMPLIMENTARY in that it can be a part of a comprehensive health care approach including conventional medical practice; it is ALTERNATIVE in that it offers more treatment options and choices than you may be aware of. Many naturopathic treatment options are evidence-based and informed by peer reviewed research standards.

Seeing a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) for the first time may be similar to seeing an MD—all primary care providers review health history and request standard diagnostic tests — but a consultation with an ND also encompasses a thorough assessment of personal health risks, including diet, exercise and stress. Naturopathic Doctors have a minimum of 7 years of post-secondary education, including a bachelors degree in the arts or sciences and then their studies are completed at an accredited naturopathic medical college. In BC, all NDs are licensed and registered with the College of Naturopathic Physicians of British Columbia.
